Tahir Qawwal

Sufi qawwali music is ancient form of devotion music that thrives to this day in Pakistan & India. In this traditional genre the verses of mystical sufi poets are given life through the emotionally charged vehicle of the voice.

The intensity of Tahir Qawwal’s stage performance with it’s smooth melodic overtures, fierce leaps of vocal passion ridding on heavy rhythmic grooves & rich vocal choruses have captivated audiences in Pakistan, India, North Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, the USA and beyond.

Schooled yearly in Pakistan by the grand masters of qawwali, Tahir offers a rare & sacred musical transmission that all can savor. His Australian ensemble is a seven-piece group made up of talented sufi musical artists from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan & Australia.

Tahir Qawwal’s principal qawwali ensemble is Fanna-Fi-Allah ( based in the USA ) www.fanna-fi-allah.com Classical ensemble is Sufi Soul Sangeet www.sufisoulsangeet.com

Why is Punjabi sufi poetry so amazing ?
With the growing amount of interest towards understanding the message & content of qawwali poetry, i felt inspired to translate a couple of Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shah's verses which are sung often.
From century to century such sufi masters have help guide humanity away from self ambition & towards the ultimate unity.

Place your votes friends, which qawwali harmonium sounds best ?
There's been a crazy number of requests for Mere Rashke Qamar, yet the arrangement & poetry is a bit simple n secular for my current taste; so here it is as a sazina demonstrating the principal qawwali harmonium types.
1. Double German jubilate reeds with coupler custom built in Faisalabad Pakistan by Master Asghar Ali.
2. Triple Indian reeds with coupler custom built in Delhi by Bina.
3. Triple German jubilate reeds without coupler custom built in Lahore by Tahir Ali.

Amazing - I like all 3! The third is quite unique tho

Amazing - I like all 3! The third is quite unique tho

The second one Delhi sounds best to me. It sounds more full and open. The chords pop through the solo more crisp and clear. The notes don't sound forced. 3rd one was my second favorite. The first one is my least favorite. The notes sound tight and forced. Kinda squished in shape.

Number 3 for sure!

Hmmmm so hard to choose with such beautiful playing and they all sound unique in their ways but I’m voting the Bina 🙏🏼

Aaj Rang Hai live in Brisbane - The classic sufi qawwali written by Hazrat Amir Khusro (ra) for his master Khwaja Nizamudin Aulia (ra). This kalam also praises the great lineage of sufi masters from Hazrat Data Ganj Buksh (ra) to Khwaja Ali Ahmad Sabir (ra).
Performed here live at the University of Queensland in Brisbane by Tahir Faridi Qawwal & Party.

A bit of english translation:
Aj Rang Hai
O earthen lamp listen to what I say, tonight is my
meeting with the Beloved, and I will remain awake all night.
Khusrau, on this wedding night, I awakened with my Beloved.
This body is mine, the heart is of the Beloved, and they are both the same shade now.
Today there is jubilation, mother, see how colourful it is! In my Beloved's house there is celebration today, see how colourful it is!
I have found the perfect Master: Nizam-ud-din Auliya. I have travelled from land to land and searched for you.
Your colour has captivated me. The world is illuminated, the entire universe is illuminated. I have never seen such colour anywhere. Now wherever I look, the Beloved is there, with me. Oh beloved, please dye me in yourself.
Dye me in the colour of the spring, Beloved. In this courtyard, today there is celebration O mother.

Byron Community Centre

Byron Bay, NSW  2481 Map

Byron Spirit Festival is honoured to present Tahir Qawwal & The Sufi Ensemble for an uplifting evening of Sufi Qawwali Music.

DEEP DEVOTION ~ ECSTATIC RHYTHM ~ MYSTICAL POETRY

Traditionally performed in Sufi ceremonies (Sama), the music of Qawwali offers a light of inspiration, kindling the light of divine love in the hearts of listeners. Tahir Qawwal has played a huge role throughout the world in bringing this music out of India and Pakistan, helping people to understand the beauty and power of the tradition and culture.

Here again at the Byron Theatre, the community is offered an opportunity to gather and connect to the devotional music and mystical poetry of Qawwali.

Joining Tahir will be musicians from Sydney, Adelaide and New Zealand.

There will be some seating up close on the floor (bring a pillow) and plenty of theatre seating, though dancing and wild abandon is encouraged!
